Not all ASSET schools offer the picnic plate, which responds to a need from our parents - in some schools this is a valued option for parents who like to cook a big meal in the evening and eat together. The menu deliberately puts the focus on the salad bar first - with it's range of child friendly vegetable sticks and dips - and the sandwich second. If your child loves the crunch and flavour of crisps with a sandwich, we'll be encouraging them to find this sensory comfort in a nutritious way, that will promote a healthy gut.
Wholemeal bread is now a feature in the government's revised School Food Standards - addressing concerns that children (and adults!) are not eating enough fibre in their diets.
If your child has a packed lunch consider changing over - particularly if their daily packed lunch contains processed and sugary snacks such as crisps, cakes, chocolate bars, processed cheese and sugary yogurts. If it's hard to navigate the daily conflict around nutritious choices, we can help - the impact of peer dining and food education in the school dining room environment may be the tool you need in what can be a tough struggle with the shiny packets and enticing marketing of the big food companies!
