The new school food standards proposed for September 2026 suggest that we must now ensure all desserts contain or are accompanied by a portion of fruit, that our menus include a fruit only dessert at least once a week and that we restrict the frequency of sweetened baked products and desserts.
We know from experience that children enjoy cake and biscuit baked puddings that are high in fat and sugar, and low in fibre. We have also seen that these foods often displace more balanced meals high in fibre and nutrients as children finish their main course option quickly, leaving vegetables in order to make space for a pudding.
Our fruity finishes combine tasty traditional favourites with fresh and cooked fruit - often combining "secret" vegetables such as beetroot, courgette and peas into cake based puddings to make desserts moist, nutritious and show children fruit and veg can be sweet and tasty treats!
If your child is put off by the thought of beetroot and peas in their cakes - leave it to us! Try It Tuesdays and other taster sessions in school are a great opportunity for children to overcome these concerns and expand their minds to the wonderful versatility of vegetables!
